Accessibility
RoadReady NZ is designed so everyone can learn the road code – including people with dyslexia, reading difficulties, low vision, attention difficulties, or who are learning in a second language.
Learning mode
Your settings are saved on this device, and to your account if you sign in. Switching never affects your progress.
Fine-tune everything
Fonts, spacing, colours, reading ruler, read-aloud voice and speed, explanation level, timers and more.
What's built in
- Dyslexia-Friendly Learning Mode, with readable fonts (including Atkinson Hyperlegible and OpenDyslexic), adjustable spacing, text width and reading backgrounds.
- A reading ruler that follows your pointer, touch or keyboard focus.
- Read-aloud on lessons, explanations, questions and answers, with sentence highlighting, speed and voice controls. Nothing plays automatically.
- Three explanation levels (simple, standard, detailed) and an "Explain it more simply" button.
- One-sentence-at-a-time reading, tap-to-define key words, and one-question-per-screen practice.
- No required timers. Scores can be hidden until you're ready.
- Visual learning: signs, diagrams and interactive scenarios, each with a text description.
- Keyboard navigation, visible focus, skip link, semantic headings, labelled forms, and support for screen readers and zoom up to 200%+.
- Colour is never the only way information is shown – answers use icons, text and borders too.
- Respects your device's reduced-motion setting.
Our standard and testing
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. We test with automated tools (axe-core) as part of development, and with keyboard-only navigation.
We have not yet completed a full independent audit or manual testing with every screen reader, so we don't claim certification. If something doesn't work for you, please use "Report a problem" on any lesson or question and choose "Accessibility problem".
RoadReady NZ doesn't diagnose dyslexia or any learning condition. The settings are for anyone who finds them helpful.
