What you will learn

Recognise what a sign's shape and colour tell you before you read it.

  • Regulatory signs
  • Warning signs
  • Information, direction and temporary signs

Regulatory signs: you must obey

Law

Regulatory signs tell you what you must or must not do. Many are round with a red border, like speed limit signs. The STOP sign (red octagon) and sign (upside-down triangle with a red border) have unique shapes so you can recognise them from any angle.

Warning signs: take care

Safe-driving advice

Permanent warning signs are usually yellow diamonds with black symbols. They warn you of a ahead, such as a sharp curve, an intersection or children crossing. Slow down and be ready.

Information, direction and temporary signs

Safe-driving advice

Information signs (often blue) show services like hospitals or rest areas. Direction signs (usually green) show routes and places. Orange signs are temporary and are used at roadworks – they must be obeyed just like permanent signs.
